Hymn to the River

Lay me down beside the river
Where the willows always grow
Amongst the scraggy gum trees
Where the stray cattle often go
Wind and rain it’s all the same
As the years roll slowly by
Hand on heart it will be home when I die

The abandoned homestead
The paddock and a burnt out car
Broken parts from who knows where
And rusted nails in jars
Magazines from years ago full of people long since gone

There beneath the floorboards
In a space that gets no sun

You can sense it from the western plains
Feel it in the morning sun
As the winter mist it finally lifts
And all the farm dogs get a run
The young folk head to city lives
Break their shackles free
Some fall through the cracks some stay
And some return like me

I’ve seen spires and temples
Of the big city cash machines
Lived In flash appartments
Been drunk in limousines

Been through wives and girlfriends
About as quick as you could be
Now I’m standing in the old shed door
That’s enough for me

As the wind comes up through
the southern hills
And the magic of a setting sun
The summer nights cast their languid spell
And the days chores are almost done

Some return to stake their claim
Break their shackles free
Settle down put down roots
Return here just like me
Just like me

Where the the willows and gun trees grow
