about

Once you drive out of the major cities you enter a different world. It's one that resonates with me more as I get older.

lyrics

Head west a couple of hours
Past the car yards past the towns
Food chains, second hand stores
You keep on driving keep on looking for more

Past the farms of the well to do
And the battlers they’re there too
The highway curves and then turns around
Then you put your right foot down

The road now skirts the run down towns
The closed up shops and hand me downs
The fallen soldiers with their names in stone
Their silent vigil now they’re all alone

If I could just go back
And thank old soldiers laying railroad tracks
With the disillusioned and unemployed
Who built the bridges that I crossed as a boy

The sun starts starts it’s downward trend
A beer beckons round the next bend
I think of those who came before
Who built these towns and laid these floors

Of all the churches and the grocery stores
The pubs that offered so much more
A spirit lost is hard to replace
Young ones leave for a different space

I can sense the ghosts around
In faded signs of reds and brown
The Ampol sign looking old and quaint
Craven As beneath the peeling paint

If I could just go back
And thank old soldiers laying railroad tracks
With the disillusioned and unemployed
Who built the bridges that I crossed as a boy

As the night settles down
I park the car and lay my burdens down
The bar is empty there’s a smoky haze
Round here has seen better days

All the men back from the Great War
They worked the land to forget what they saw
It just became another cross to bear
It wasn’t right and it wasn’t fair

Sometimes at the end of the day
As the shadows fall in a different way
I see these towns in a different light
Just not a stop for another night

If I could just go back
And thank old soldiers laying railroad tracks
With the disillusioned and unemployed
Who built the bridges that I crossed as a boy
Who built the bridges that I crossed as a boy
